Overview: Developing a
building that was environmentally sustainable was one of the major parameters of
the design for the new Moana Surf Club facility. The use of non-ferrous
structure, cladding and lining materials was
identified as a high priority given the extreme coastal location.
The timber radial sawn batten and board cladding was selected for it's innate
qualities and also because it reinforced the architectural concepts and added
another level of interpretation about seaside building:- evoking boats,
driftwood and the wind-driven nature of the environment. The new surf club
facility now forms an integral and iconic element in
the urban fabric of the area, giving the life saving club a strong identity
both in the context of the local community and as part of
the wider urban coastal strip .
